City in Upper Alsace, one of the members of the DECAPOLIS, under the overlordship of the King of France from 1648. It was annexed by France in 1672 and forced to submit the following year.

From 1698 it was the seat of the conseil souverain (the highest court of appeal) of Alsace, and it remains the seat for the cour d’appel for the Departments of the Bas- and Haut-Rhin.

It is the capital of the Haut-Rhin, and was also its Bishopric from 1790 until 1802.
