District in north central Portugal, through which the Mondego River flows to the Atlantic. It was formed from the province of Beira in 1833.

The title of Duke of Coimbra was used by some Portuguese princes, notably by Peter, who was Regent for his nephew, Alfonso V, for some years after 1438.

The city had been recovered by Ferdinand I of Castile in 1064 from the Muslims and formed part of the original County of Portugal.
