WSW of Verdun, was held by the Counts of Bar as a fief of the Bishops of Verdun (and so, although west of the Meuse, was not part of the Barrois mouvant, for which the Counts of Bar paid homage to the King of France, because it was not the Counts’ own land).

It became French in 1641 and the title of Count of Clermont-en-Argonne was held by members of the Bourbon-Condé family (confusingly, as the title of Count of Clermont-en-Beauvais was also held by them).
