Revolutionary Republic, south of the lower River Po (its name means this side of the Po – i.e. from Rome – and echoes that of the ancient Cispadane Gaul).

The Republic, the first of the sister republics of the French Republic, was formed in December 1796 from the lands of the Duchy of Modena and the Papal lands in the northern Romagna, including Bologna and Ferrara.   It merged with the Cisalpine Republic in July 1797.
