Scottish region formed in 1975 from Stirlingshire, Clackmannan and the southwest of Perthshire.
It was divided into three districts, Falkirk, Clackmannan and Stirling. These became the unitary authorities of Falkirk, Clackmannanshire and Stirlingshire when Central Region was abolished in 1996. It was 7th in area of the nine regions, and was also smaller than the Western Isles. It was 6th in population.
