Region around Vilnius, the medieval and present capital of Lithuania.

Vilnius is now in the east of Lithuania, but the region was “central” in respect of the Great Principality of Lithuania of the later middle ages, though as that Principality advanced to take in all of modern Belarus and a fair portion of Ukraine, it became far from literally so.

The region was in inter-war Poland:  see also VILNIUS.
