The city of Cardiff, the administrative capital of Wales, was a county borough, 1889-1974.

In the system created by the Local Government Act of 1972 it became the Cardiff district in the county of South Glamorgan.

In the reforms that went into effect in April 1996 Cardiff became a unitary authority as the City and County of Cardiff.   It was slightly enlarged with the addition of Pentyrch, from the Taf-Ely district in Mid-Glamorgan.
