The Dukes were a non-reigning branch of the Dukes of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, taking their title from a castle and town east of the River Weser and northeast of Holzminden, in southern  Niedersachsen.

The first Duke was the son of the third marriage of Duke August, the first Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel Duke of the New House of Brunswick, who died in 1666.  The second Duke succeeded his cousin in Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel in March 1735, dying in September.  His brother, who died in 1746, then held the title of Duke of Bevern.
