Medieval County in the Holy Roman Empire, named from the town, now in western Austria, on the eastern shores of Lake Constance (Bodensee).

The County was held by a branch of the Udalrichinger, and when that line died out, Bregenz passed to the Counts of Pfullendorf, also members of that family.  They in turn died out c.1180, and Bregenz passed to the Counts of Montfort, who held it until they sold it to the Habsburgs in two parcels, in 1451 and 1523.  Bregenz was one of the several territories that eventually constituted the VORARLBERG.
