The medieval and early modern Swedish regions of West and East Bothnia (Västerbotten and Osterbotten) lay either side of the Gulf of Bothnia (Botten means valley bottom).   In 1809 East Bothnia, with the rest of Finland, came under the rule of the Russian Tsar.

The two northernmost of the present Swedish län (counties), which were first formed in the 1630s, are Västerbotten and Norrbotten (North Bothnia).   They are also the two largest of the Swedish counties.
