Lordship in the north of France;  its lords were the stewards of the Counts of Boulogne.   When the English took Calais in 1347 Ardres became the border town of the French Kingdom – it lies just south of Calais.   At the meeting of the Field of the Cloth of Gold in 1520 Ardres was the base of Francis I.
