The one-time capital of the Welf lands in Swabia stands near Lake Constance (Bodensee) and belongs to the Ravensburg Landkreis in  Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany.  It is now part of the town of Weingarten, which grew up beside the monastery of Weingarten, founded by the Welfs as their burial Abbey.  Altdorf  lies northwards from Ravensburg, which replaced it as capital of the Welf properties.   The Welf properties in Swabia passed to the Hohenstaufen in 1191 after the death of Welf VI.
