Aigle

AIGLE

Town in the district in southwestern Switzerland which lies east of the River Rhône as it approaches Lake Geneva.   Aigle and district belonged to Savoy until seized by Bern in 1475.  In 1798 the district became part of the Canton of Léman in the Helvetic Republic, and since 1803 has been the southeastern district of the Canton of Vaud in the Swiss Confederation, the Rhône forming the boundary with Valais.
